| AIBN Building | |
AIBN is located in a state-of-the-art, $75 million building containing the latest in laboratory design. It also has available a number of Facilities servicing the broader research and industry sectors.
National Research and Development Infrastucture
The Institute is also headquarters to the National Research and Development Infrastructure, one of the largest clusters of facilities in the country. The equipment, expertise and engagement with research and industry organisations embodied in the Infrastructure enables Australian researchers to conduct globally competitive research in the areas of:
Over $30 million has been invested in this Infrastructure through the Queensland government’s Smart State Innovation Building Fund, the Australian government’s, National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) and the University of Queensland.
This National Infrastructure is a significant vote of confidence in both Queensland’s and Australia’s research and development capabilities. The facilities will stimulate new research ideas and novel approaches to solving industrial problems as a means to meet national research challenges and build national research capabilities. In this regard, the infrastructure is responsive to industry demand while promoting research innovation.
Protein Expression Facility
The Protein Expression Facility (PEF) is an initiative supported by both AIBN and the Institute for Molecular Bioscience to assist research groups in UQ and throughout Australia to express and purify their recombinant proteins of interest.
PEF offers extensive experience in recombinant protein expression, with state-of-the-art facilities and a team of highly skilled professionals who posses a vast knowledge of the challenges associated with protein expression and purification.
PEF specialises in the following areas:
- Molecular Biology Services
A range of molecular services including construct design, cloning gene of interest into expression vector, site-directed mutagenesis and vector development.
- Protein Expression Services
A range of host systems such as bacterial, yeast (Pichia Pastoris or Kluyveromyces lactis), insect cell/baculovirus and transient mammalian cell expression (CHO and HEK293) are available to achieve optimal expression for a variety of uses.
- Downstream Processing Services
Protein purification using a range of chromatography techniques (e.g. affinity, size exclusion, ion exchange) and protein analysis (CD, mass spectroscopy)
- Training and Consultation Services
Provide training to staff and students interested in protein expression and purification.
