The University of Queensland (UQ) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the University of Washington, US.

This overarching MoU will facilitate collaborative opportunities between the institutions, particularly activities between UQ’s Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology(AIBN) and the University of Washington’s Molecular Engineering and Sciences Institute(MOLES).

In an increasingly globalised world, universities and research communities will continue to derive significant advantage through partnerships. This new international collaboration between the two universities will build on strong foundations to extend and enhance research and innovation through partnership.

The University of Washington is one of UQ’s most engaged international institutions, and is in UQ’s top 10 institutions for co-publishing.  In the period 2008-2013, UQ and University of Washington researchers co-published 129 articles.

UQ has an active student exchange agreement with University of Washington, which commenced in 2006.

Between 2009 and 2013, UQ and the University of Washington (Seattle) ran the Trans-Pacific Fellowships to support high-achieving graduate degree candidates (MS, PhD) and Senior Fellows and Faculty to undertake study and research on an exchange basis between the two universities.

UQ and the University of Washington are both members of the prestigious edX MOOCs consortium and there may be opportunities for greater collaboration in this space.

The Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology and MOLES, two leading research institutes, have identified shared interests and complementarily, not only to share costly infrastructure and resources, but also to enrich research and training opportunities.

The research institutes have identified opportunities that are worth exploring in the area of image analysis, particularly collaboration centred on the latest technology available at UQ’s Centre for Advanced Imaging.

The MoU signing took place at the AIBN on Monday 7 July as part of the NanoBio 2014 conference in the company of distinguished plenary speakers, and previous and current International Nano Conference Chairs.
